Environmental and Level Design

Environmental and Level Design

For Mousu, stages 1 and 5 were designed and laid out by me. I was also responsible for fully set dressing, with models created and textured by me for these stages. You can find a collection of models created for this project by me in the Environment Art Section

Stage 1

The first stage of Mousu is a desolated and damaged town that has been the result of the rat invasion. I designed this level to show a destroyed town while still conveying a linear and beginner experience for the player. The level has a simple and linear layout, consisting of multiple streets and corners where chests can spawn. Once a chest would be open, enemies can spawn. from both sides to corner the player, both teaching the player what a chest would do, as well as keeping the immersion of a warrior inside a crowed and cramped town surrounded by enemies.

The final stage of Mousu is inside the castle of the fallen Mouse Kingdom. It represents the long and great history of mice, the dwelled long before the player’s entrance. It follows a nordic theme of being predominantly stone built, with magnificent arches and walls that are now worn and broken down with the invasion of the rats. Great statues and pillars were constructed to show the idea of the precision and perfection of the mouse kingdom in the past. The design of the stage came up in pre-production with the idea of having a balcony on the sides, adding a layer of depth where enemies can spawn around the player. The statues were to show great leaders in the past, as well as give the player a way of stopping the boss from charging; giving the player an advantageous way of defecting the boss.
